Students <\/span><span><span>often<\/span><\/span><span> do not collocate words very well (which is why they don\u2019t receive IELTS 7 or 8). To do this, all the parts of speech [adjectives &amp; nouns, verbs &amp; adverbs, prepositions &amp; nouns, and others] must fit together in accepted patterns, stylishly and nice, while all the time conveying clear and precise meaning \u2013 like the video at the top of this page. Watch it, and notice all the parts of this complex creation blend together perfectly. This is what your writing should be like.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Well, t<\/span><span><span>o have \u2018a sense of collocation\u2019 (= IELTS 7), you need to have some familiarity with English. A quarter of your IELTS score is based on vocabulary, and an IELTS 7 has the ability to write with \u2018<em>some<\/em> flexibility and <em>precision<\/em>\u2019 (quoted from the public version of the IELTS Band Descriptors). The key word is \u2018precision\u2019. Be precise! \u2018Uncomfortable\u2019 is vague. \u2018Withdrawal symptoms\u2019 is <em>totally<\/em> precise (not just having \u2018some\u2019 of this quality = <em>higher<\/em> than IELTS 7).
